A Bonobo stares at the photographer, a strange visitor to his forest home in DRC, Africa

Inquisitive Stare

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa

Bonobos are great apes, along with chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and humans. All but orangutans are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Like other great apes, they have opposable thumbs and big toes. Humans share 98.7% of our DNA with bonobos and they are our closest-related extant relatives. However, physically they most closely resemble chimpanzees.

Bonobos are usually a bit smaller, leaner, and darker than chimpanzees. The bonobo's head is also smaller with less prominent brow ridges. It has a darker face with small ears, wide nostrils, and longer hair on its head. The bonobo also has a slim upper body, narrow shoulders, thin neck, and long legs when compared to chimpanzees.
