Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa
Sitting comfortable in the forest canopy of the DRC, this bonobo keeps an eye on its surroundings as it feeds on the fruit of a wild pepper plant. With long limbs, relatively slight builds and opposable thumbs and big toes, they are able to skillfully navigate to gather fruits that are in season.
Unlike many other primate species, female bonobos have large, permanently swollen labia and perineal tissue, which can remain enlarged for long periods. This permanent sexual swelling doesn't just signal fertility as it is not always linked to ovulation, but also plays a role in social dynamics and complex communication, a key feature of bonobo social behavior.
