Bonobo Eating a Stem

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa

Shortly after arising bonobos move about the canopy to forage. While they favor fruit, they are known to eat plants, stems, flowers, leaves, roots and mushroom, and will opportunistically eat meat from small mammals and insects. They can travel quickly through the forest as they move from one food source to another.

Bonobos are diurnal and semi-terrestrial. They rest when temperatures are high and travel to their sleeping sites before nightfall. They climb high in the trees and there they create safe sleeping sites, making nests of leaves, branches and stems from different trees. At dawn the next day, the cycle is repeated.
