Born to be Agile
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa
Bonobos are both terrestrial and arboreal. During the day they spend more than 50% of their time foraging, about 25% of the time resting, and up to 20% traveling. At a young age they learn to travel quickly through the forest as they move from one food source to another. This juvenile bonobo in the DRC follows its mother across a tree branch while foraging in the early morning hours.
The bonobo is only found in a 500,000 km2 (190,000 sq mi) area within the Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They inhabit dense primary and secondary forests but also venture into seasonally inundated swamp forests. Bonobos can move efficiently in this environment, but humans cannot. Frequent rain and humidity, dense forest that obscures the subjects, and low levels of ambient light all combine to make it difficult to capture images of bonobos in their natural environment.
