Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa

The bonobo is predominantly frugivorous. Their diet consists mainly of plant products including fruit, seeds, sprouts, leaves, flowers, bark, stems, pith, roots, and mushrooms. They are also known to opportunistically consume small mammals, insect larvae, earthworms, honey, eggs, and soil.

Bonobos are diurnal and semi-terrestrial; 44% of their time is spent in trees and 56% on the ground. They climb to access ripe fruits, to travel to new territories and to create safe sleeping sites high up in the trees. Most ground locomotion is characterized by quadrupedal knuckle-walking; Bipedal terrestrial locomotion has been recorded as less than 1% in the wild. But they are adept in the trees, moving effortlessly from branch to branch, standing and reaching as needed to get to a food source.
