Painted Wolves surround a Cape buffalo calf as some of the herd attempt a rescue.

Cape Buffalo and Painted Wolves

Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

Cape Buffalos will frequently attempt to rescue one of their herd, and they often succeed for they are very tough and do not give up easily. But this attempt rallies some of the Painted Wolves in the pack that just seconds before were resting after the chase. It was size and strength against persistence and numbers. A vulture takes to the air to avoid the tussle.
