At Home in the Trees

Congo, Africa

Chimpanzees use trees for shelter, food, travel and communication. In them they build nests for sleeping, forage for fruit and insects, and use them as platforms for drumming to communicate. They also consume certain tree barks and leaves for medicinal purposes, and use tools like sticks and stones in conjunction with trees to extract food.

To sleep at night they build large, comfortable platforms in trees from branches and leaves, though some also build nests on the ground. For resting during the day they create smaller "nap nests" which can be in trees or on the ground.
