Chimpanzees live in communities that typically range from around 15 to more than 150 members but spend most of their time traveling in small, temporary groups. Males are generally dominant over females and patrol the territory, protect the group, and search for food. Male chimpanzees engage in intense competition and form alliances to achieve and maintain their rank, with the alpha male at the top. Though chimpanzee groups are male-dominated, females can exert influence and control over the group's social dynamics. They can form alliances and their support can be crucial for a male seeking or maintaining the alpha position.
