Miradouro da Ribeira da Janela is a famous site on Madeira and for good reason. It can be visually stunning at any time of day, but is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset. The surf can be calm at times but can also be quite violent.

The island of Madeira is relatively young, with the landmass of Madeira itself forming approximately 5 million years ago from volcanic eruptions. On this beach, the pounding of the waves has not yet reduced the volcanic rocks (primarily basalt) to the black sand they will be in the future.
