The island of Madeira is relatively young in geologic time, with the landmass of Madeira itself forming approximately 5 million years ago from volcanic eruptions. On this beach, the pounding of the waves has not yet reduced the volcanic formations (primarily basalt) to the black sand they will be in the future.
