Two White Rhinos Up Close

Kenya, Africa

The olfactory center is the largest part of a rhino’s brain, consistent with the fact that the sense of smell is a rhino's most critical sense. They use it to identify each other, mark territory, and find food.

Rhinos also have excellent hearing and can rotate their large ears independently to pinpoint the source of sounds. Their cup-shaped ears efficiently catch and direct sound waves to the inner ear.

But rhinos have poor color vision and are nearsighted, so they can only see clearly at very close distances. This may cause them to mistake movement for a threat. If something is stationery and they are not on alert, curiosity gets the best of them and they will approach it. In this case, these white rhinos moved rather close to examine a camera kit place on a groundpod. As they did the camera was triggered with a Bluetooth controller as I watched from a nearby vehicle.
