White Rhinoceros Up Close

Kenya, Africa

Rhinos have poor color vision and are nearsighted, so they can only see clearly at very close distances. This may cause them to mistake movement for a threat. They will stop and stare, using their excellent senses of smell and hearing to evaluate a possible threat. But if something is quiet and stationery, and they are not on alert, curiosity gets the best of them and they may approach it.

In this case, this white rhino in Kenya came rather close to examine a camera kit I placed on a ground pod. As it did I triggered the camera with a Bluetooth controller while watching from a nearby vehicle. Of course, in this situation you cannot control where the rhino appears in the frame. It was fortunate that the rhino stood at the far edge of the frame, casting its full shadow off to the side, allowing for both a frontal and side view of the rhino in the same image.
