A bonobo looks out from its perch in a tree during its morning food foray in the DRC, Africa

Bonobo Peering from Behind Leaves

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa

The bonobo has highly individuated facial features so that one individual may look significantly different from another. This characteristic allows for visual facial recognition during social interactions - Bonobos are capable of altruism, compassion, empathy, kindness, patience, and sensitivity. They have even been observed sharing food with others that are not within their social group.

Bonobos are generally timid, and live deep in the dark dense forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). As such, they can be hard to locate and follow. This, combined with their decreasing numbers, deforestation and the political instability in the region has resulted in relatively little field work done observing the species in its natural habitat. Relative to the other great apes in Africa, less is known about this species.
