Horned Grebe with Chick

The summer plumage of a horned grebe includes a gray-black head and back, a rust-red neck, and yellow-orange "horns" on its head. The parents bond during a mating display called a ceremony, then take turns sitting on the eggs in the nest. As with many grebe species, chicks ride on their parents' backs, nestled in between their wings. The chicks may even dive underwater with their parents as they feed.
