Roosting Tree Swallows
South Carolina, USA
Tree swallows are commonly found near the water in wooded habitats and are among the most hyperactive and acrobatic birds I have ever seen and tried to photograph. An aerial insectivore, they chase after flying insects with acrobatic twists and turns, their blue-green feathers flashing in the sunlight. They are never still for long and are constantly squabbling.
Migrating and wintering tree swallows can form enormous flocks, gathering before sunset to descend onto a roosting site. They are cavity-nesters, using dead trees but also readily using nesting boxes.
