Tree Climber

Congo, Africa

The western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is the smallest subspecies of gorilla, and one of two subspecies of the western gorilla. It is found in the dense forests and lowland swamps of central, western Africa, where they can be difficult to locate and photograph.

Like all gorillas, it is primarily herbivorous, and its main diet consists of roots, shoots, fruit, foliage, wild celery, tree bark and pulp. This combination provides a balance of nutrients, and changes depending on the time of year. When ripe fruit is available they tend to eat more fruit as opposed to foliage, but when fruit is in scarce supply, they eat leaves, herbs and bark.
