Dogwoods bloom in the spring along with azaleas in South Carolina among the pine trees.

Dogwoods, Azaleas and Pines

South Carolina, USA

Dogwoods are small deciduous trees native to South Carolina and are typically understory plants. Interestingly, these trees blossom in the spring with showy white flowers before growing their leaves. These flowers are actually bracts, which are modified or specialized leaves associated with a reproductive structure. Dogwoods need moist, well-drained, acidic soil and thrive in dappled light, so they are frequently seen growing in coastal pine barrens.

Azaleas are native to the forests of the Southern United States, particularly in the Appalachian region and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. They are frequently seen in the southeast and bloom abundantly in the spring.
