Dogwoods and Oaks
South Carolina, USA
Dogwoods are small deciduous trees native to South Carolina and are typically understory plants. Interestingly, these trees blossom in the spring with showy white flowers before growing their leaves. These flowers are actually bracts, which are modified or specialized leaves associated with a reproductive structure. Dogwoods need moist, well-drained, acidic soil and thrive in dappled light, so they are frequently seen growing in coastal pine barrens.
Live Oaks are the quintessential low-country hardwood, known for their gnarled and twisted limbs. They can grow to a very large size and live for hundreds of years. The name live oak comes from the fact that evergreen oaks remain green and "live" throughout winter, when other oaks are dormant and leafless.
