Gemsbok

Namibia, Africa

The gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is a large antelope endemic to the dry and barren regions of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Gemsbok are the largest species of oryx and are powerfully built, with sturdy, muscular bodies. They are well-adapted to survive in the desert.

Gemsbok predators in Africa include lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs, which primarily target calves or weaker individuals. They are formidable prey due to their size and formidable horns. They will fiercely defend themselves, sometimes fatally injuring their attackers. Gemsbok are widely hunted for their horns. In males horns tend to be thicker with larger bases. Females have slightly longer, thinner horns.
