Africa’s painted wolves have been known by several names including the African wild dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted hunting dog and painted dog. Whatever they are called there is no denying they are formidable predators. The Painted wolves are specialists in pack hunting, generally pursuing medium sized antelopes. Built for speed and endurance, chases frequently occur over several kilometers at speeds up to 66 km/hr during which they chase larger prey to exhaustion. Teamwork and communication help the painted wolves rank among the most successful hunters in Africa with success rates of more than 60%.
A pack of Painted Wolves in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park has grown to over 20 and has now taken to hunting the very formidable Cape Buffalo. The chase of the thundering herd has kicked up a dust cloud. That, combined with the action and the contrasty light filtering through the trees nicely sets the atmosphere of this image.
