Kebler Pass in Autumn

The mountains of southwestern Colorado transition from the greens of summer to the golden-yellow hues of fall as winter approaches. The stars of the show are generally the quaking aspen trees throughout the range. 

Kebler Pass is home to one of the largest continuous aspen groves in the world. Because aspens propagate by sending up clones from a single, massive underground root system, large pockets of trees share identical genetics. Certain genetic strains within this grove are predisposed to producing red and orange hues rather than yellow that is typically seen elsewhere. But the golden-yellow color predominates.
