Great Blue Heron Flying
South Carolina, USA
Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) feature predominantly blue-gray plumage with white-faced, black-striped heads, and exhibit significant seasonal changes. During breeding (Feb–Apr), they grow long plumes on their back, neck, and breast, with increased rufous-brown tones and bright yellow-orange bills. Immature birds are duller, lacking these long, shaggy plumes. But they are beautiful birds in any season.
