Elephants have the longest gestation period of any mammal, carrying their babies for almost two years. From birth, they rarely leave their mother's side. And elephants are wonderful mothers, carrying their calves over obstacles, protecting them from predators, and bathing them with their trunks. They also teach their calves how to swim, stand and to find food and water. They produce milk that's high in fat and protein, with calves nursing for about 2 years or longer.

Elephants live in matriarchal herds, where the oldest female controls the social structure and ensures the survival of the family. The entire herd helps raise the young, including aunts, sisters, and other female elephants. Elephant are fiercely protective of their calves, and the entire family will come together to protect the youngest members. If a calf becomes orphaned, the rest of the herd will adopt it.
