American White Pelicans
South Carolina, USA
The American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America, with a 9-foot wingspan. It has the second-largest average wingspan of any North American bird, after the California condor. This large wingspan allows the bird to easily use soaring flight for migration with flocks often soaring very high in the air. But despite its great size it is also an agile flier, often seen wheeling and circling in unison.
The American White Pelican is similar to Brown Pelican in shape but much larger, and very different in habits. Unlike the brown pelican, the American white pelican does not dive for its food as it catches prey while swimming. And each bird eats more than four pounds of food a day.
