Spiny-backed Orb weaver Spider

South Carolina, USA

The spiny-backed Orb Weaver Spider (Gasteracantha cancriformis), is also known as the Spiny orb weaver, or the crab-like orbweaver. Its genus Gasteracantha derives from the Greek words gaster ("belly") and acantha (“thorn"), while cancriformis derives from the Latin words cancer ("crab") and forma ("appearance").

It is found throughout North America. Its lifespan is rather short and lasts only until reproduction, which usually takes place in the spring following the winter when they hatched. Females die after producing an egg mass, and males die six days after a complete cycle of sperm induction to the female. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
