Cypress Trees and fog-shrouded Winyah bay at dawn

Cypress Trees and Fog at Dawn

South Carolina, USA

Air can only hold a certain amount of water. When the temperature drops below the dew point (the temperature at which dew is able to form), condensation occurs. During condensation, molecules of water vapor combine to make tiny liquid water droplets that hang in the air creating fog. Fog is essentially a cloud that lies low along the ground or above water.

Fog can add a sense of atmosphere to a photograph. It obscures some detail and can simplify a scene. In this image it covers the bay and the Cypress trees appear to “float” out of the fog.

Fog often dissipates with daylight as it did shortly after this image was taken. When the sun rises the air warms up. This leads to the air temperature being warmer than the dew point temperature, thus causing the water droplets to evaporate. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
