The Anhinga is often called a "snake bird" for its long snakelike neck, seen as it slithers through the water.
Unlike most waterbirds, the Anhinga doesn't have waterproof feathers. It is often seen perched with its wings spread while drying out its feathers. Their wet feathers and dense bones help them slowly submerge their bodies under the water where they stalk fish.
However, this male has dry feathers which show off their details quite nicely. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
