The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is the largest reptile in North America and can grow up to 15 feet in length or more. It is the second largest member of the family Alligatoridae, with only the Black Caiman perhaps growing larger.
American alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. They are cold-blooded and are frequently seen basking in the sun to warm up, and seeking refuge in the water to cool down. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
