Zebra Sunset Trek
Kenya, Africa
The dried-out pan of Lake Amboseli is a remnant of an ancient Pleistocene lake that only fills during the rainy seasons. It dries out for a prolonged time during the two dry seasons, from June–October and January–February. The cracked, dusty expanse is a direct highway for wildlife migrating between the western, dry, grazing plains, and the spring-fed swamps to the east. There they find water, fresh grass, and mineral-rich, alkaline soils. These swamps are fed year round by underground springs filtering down from Mount Kilimanjaro. This provides the animals a lifeline during dry seasons.
Close to sunset, these Grant’s zebras cross the expansive, dried-out pan. The wide-open space of the dry lake bed allow herd animals to spot approaching predators from a safe distance.
