California Sea Lions
California, USA
California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are highly intelligent, social "eared seals" native to the West Coast of North America. It is one of six species of sea lions. It has a large natural habitat range from southeast Alaska to central Mexico. They are opportunistic carnivores, eating over 50 species of fish and cephalopods, including squid, anchovies, mackerel, and salmon.
They have external ear flaps and large foreflippers that allow them to "walk" on land, and are exceptionally fast swimmers, reaching speeds of 25-30 mph. They often seen "rafting”, floating with flippers out of the water to regulate their body temperature. These sea lions are known for their dog-like barking and playful nature, and are frequently seen hauled out in large groups on rocky shores, piers, and buoys.
