Moose Cow and Calf
Alaska, USA
Moose calves are born in spring with reddish coats, weighing about 30–35 lbs. They grow rapidly, gaining up to 2 lbs daily on rich milk. While they start by nursing, calves quickly begin foraging for twigs and vegetation. They stand within hours, staying with their mothers for about a year, learning to forage and avoid predators. They are fiercely protected by cows. They leave the mother just before new calves are born.
