Caribou in the Alpine Tundra
Alaska, USA
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in the alpine tundra are specialized, often sedentary, or nomadic herds inhabiting high-elevation mountain zones in North America and Eurasia. They are distinct from the large, migratory barren-ground herds.
The alpine tundra is characterized by high, tree-less mountain environments. During the summer these caribou thrive in this rugged terrain, feeding on nutritious grasses, shrubs, mosses, and herbs, before descending to lower elevations in winter to avoid deep snow. They are equipped with large, concave hoof pads that act like snowshoes in the winter, but become spongy in summer for traction on wet tundra.
