Sunrise with Sea Foam
South Carolina, USA
Sea foam, or spume, is created by the agitation of seawater, particularly when it contains higher concentrations of dissolved organic matter. The organic material, (proteins, lignins, and lipids) is generally derived from sources such as the offshore algal blooms. These compounds act as surfactants or foaming agents, and as the water is churned by breaking waves the surfactants trap air, forming persistent bubbles that stick to each other through surface tension.
