Congo, Africa

Adult chimpanzees stand close to five feet tall. Fully grown males weigh between 88 and 154 lbs and females weigh between 60 and 110 lbs. The chimpanzees’ arms are longer than its legs and can reach below the knees. Their hands have long fingers with short thumbs and flat fingernails. The feet are adapted for grasping, and the big toe is opposable. As with bonobos and gorillas, chimpanzees move quadrupedally by knuckle-walking.

Chimpanzees communicatethrough a complex system of vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions. They use a combination of grunts, hoots, and calls for different situations like food or danger, and employ a rich set of gestures and body language, such as stomping, clapping, or presenting their rear. This multi-modal communication is used for everything from making social requests like grooming to warning others about a threat.
