An adult chimpanzee adroitly descends from a tree in the Congo, West Africa.

Adroit Descent

Congo, Africa

Adult chimpanzees stand close to five feet tall. Their arms are longer than their legs and can reach below the knees. Their hands have long fingers with short thumbs and flat fingernails. The feet are adapted for grasping, and the big toe is opposable. As with bonobos and gorillas, chimpanzees move quadrupedally by knuckle-walking. They are at home in the trees as well as on the ground.

Chimpanzees use trees for shelter, food, travel and communication. In them they build nests for sleeping, forage for fruit and insects, and use them as platforms for drumming to communicate. They also consume certain tree barks and leaves for medicinal purposes and use tools like sticks and stones in conjunction with trees to extract food.
