Breaking Wave
Madeira, Portugal
The phases of a wave refer to the four main stages of an ocean wave's life cycle: formation by wind, propagation across the ocean, shoaling as it approaches shallow water, and breaking at the shoreline. These stages describe the wave's journey from its creation to its eventual dissolution into whitewater or turbulence near the coast. The energy in these waves will eventually break up rocky shorelines, pounding the rocks into sand.
