The Fanal Forest
Madeira, Portugal
The Fanal Forest is an ancient laurel forest located on the island of Madeira, Portugal. It is known for its unique, gnarled trees, frequent fog, and moss-covered landscape. It is a unique ecosystem where endemic species thrive, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Laurissilva Forest. These trees, some hundreds of years old, exist along with diverse endemic and evergreen plant species from the laurel family.
This is a popular destination known for its ethereal beauty. It is often described as a "fairy forest" due to its mystical atmosphere, created by ancient, fog-draped laurel trees that look like pieces of art.
The Fanal Forest provides a vital ecological role for the island, helping to maintain water balance by replenishing water catchments and aquifers.
