Bald Cypress Tree at Sunset

Cypress is a common name for various coniferous trees from the Cupressus genus. Interestingly, the name derives from Cyparissus, a mythological figure who was turned into a tree after killing a stag.

The Bald Cypress variety is native to the Southeastern United States. It is a large, hardy, slow-growing, and long-lived tree, adaptable to a wide range of soil types. In the fall it’s leaves develop into a russet-red color, lending some ephemeral color to the cypress forests of the south.

The National Champion Bald Cypress is in the Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge, near St. Francisville, Louisiana. It is 96 feet tall, 56 feet in circumference, and is estimated to be approximately 1,500 years old. The oldest known living specimen, found along the Black River in North Carolina, is at least 2,624 years old.

This tree is a much younger specimen, growing in an old rice-field along a blackwater river in South Carolina. Hopefully it will become a grand specimen in a few centuries, as this river continues to recover from the diffuse logging of the past.
