North Carolina's barrier islands are long, narrow strips of land separating the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean. These islands play a crucial role in protecting the mainland from ocean waves and storms, while also providing diverse natural habitats and tourism opportunities. Facing east, they are a great place to catch a sunrise.
Barrier islands act as natural buffers, absorbing wave energy and reducing the impact of storm surges on the mainland. These islands are constantly shifting due to natural processes like erosion, overwash, and sediment transport. The barrier islands of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore support a variety of wildlife and ecosystems. These include nesting grounds for birds and sea turtles, and wintering grounds for migrating waterfowl.
