Pronghorn are North America’s fastest land mammal, reaching speeds up to 55 mph when fleeing from predators. They have large eyes, fantastic vision and prefer open, expansive terrain. They eat a wide variety of plant foods, and have the longest land migration of any hoofed animal in America’s lower 48 states.
Both males and females have a pair of short horns on the top of the head. The female’s horns are small, usually only a bump. In contrast, the males’ horns are around 10 to 12 inches long. A pronghorns' horns extend straight up and then curve toward the rump. At the front of the horn is a small “prong” that points forward, hence the animal's name. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
