Pronghorn Portrait

Montana, USA

Pronghorn are North America’s fastest land mammal, reaching speeds up to 55 mph when fleeing from predators. They have large eyes, fantastic vision and prefer open, expansive terrain. They eat a wide variety of plant foods, and have the longest land migration of any hoofed animal in America’s lower 48 states.

Both males and females have a pair of short horns on the top of the head. The female’s horns are small, usually only a bump. In contrast, the males’ horns are around 10 to 12 inches long. A pronghorns' horns extend straight up and then curve toward the rump. At the front of the horn is a small “prong” that points forward, hence the animal's name.
