Sunset in an Old Ricefield

South Carolina, USA

The sun, cypress trees and clouds are reflected in the calm waters of an old ricefield. Rice was an important crop in the coastal plain of South Carolina until the end of the 19th century. tidal fresh water rivers were used, as this allowed control of the level of the water in the ricefield through the use of locks. Today they are no longer cultivated and are slowly returning to their natural states. Photo © copyright by Dr. Edward Mikol.
