A elk cow dines with its calf amongst the bloom of Arnica in a mountain meadow. Calves are born in the late spring or early summer, and are covered in white spots as camouflage to hide from predators. The white spots slowly fade as the calf assumes a more mature coat. Summer is a time of abundance. A calf weighs about 35 pounds at birth and can gain up to 8 times its weight by winter.
